Nothing succeeds like excess–at least that’s the case with Queen’s breakthrough classic, A Night at the Opera. On one level, the title is a reference to the band’s operatic pretensions, best in evidence here on the classic “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which was championed by headbangers a generation before being revived by the Wayne’s World set. I’m sorry, but “Bohemian Rhapsody” has got to rank among the stupidest songs ever. It’s pretentious, silly, and just plan makes no sense. It has everything to do with over the top self indulgence and nothing to do with the spirit of rock and roll.

The Jaded Ear says:

For those too young to have suffered through the age of Prog Rock (now extinct as the Dodo), this is not real rock music. Who knows what it is: creatures of the ilk of Bocelli and Liberace probably could perform it. With the exception of “Death on Two Legs” this is best left to old stoners and the peculiar kids without any friends. “An affront to rock and roll music”, PulpFiction4Life

Queen don’t rock! And A Night At the Opera is a perfect example of why not. Far too pretentious to be considered rock. Avoid!

Sorry, but what is all the hoopla about this album? The only good songs are Bohemian Rhapsody, You’re My Best Friend, and Love of My Life. The first two you can get on their greatest hits albums. The rest of the songs are just plain silly and lack real musical talent. The Game is clearly their best album, not this piece of garbage. Save your money for Greatest Hits and The Game.
