“An Incompleat History of Rock ‘n Roll” — Episode 2 — Springsteen at Sing Sing, 1972

Posted by Top Songs

Welcome to the second episode of what David Wild of Rolling Stone has called “the most promising Web music series” of 2010. Created by Greg Mitchell, former editor at legendary Crawdaddy magazine and author of nine books, it offers a highly personal look at several decades of rock ‘n roll — from Elvis Presley to Elvis Costello. This month: On helping to create the very first magazine article about Bruce Springsteen after hanging out with him at Sing Sing Prison in December 1972. If you missed the trailer and episode one (on Fats Domino and other New Orleans piano greats) for the series you can find the link on this channel. Don’t forget to subscribe! I wonder: do you really don’t know how to spell “incomplete” or is it some kind of joke?

Bruce and the E Street Band live was one of the best open secrets in Seattle I can think of. I saw him in Oct 0f ‘75, then went out and purchased 21st row seats for the first ‘78 show (the promoter bought the first 20 rows… anyway here’s this band with all this intensity and an album called Darkness on the Edge of town and I’m having a tough time getting someone into the 2800 seat Paramount NW.

No kidding. Those demos are fantastic and among my favorite Bruce recordings. Nebraksa circa 1972! :-)

Vini tells a great story of how they learned Thundercrack in parts and it took something like forever to learn the whole song and get it down pat.

In answer to the question below: Yes, he certainly did perform “Thundercrack” back then. Opening sets I saw on December 7, 1972, included “Circus Song,” “Spirit in the Night,” “For You,” “Janey Needs A Shooter,” “Lost in the Flood,” etc.

Springsteen sang Thundercrack that long ago? I mean, I know he had it written back then but I didnt think he played it until later.

Good info about the Boss & ESB.
Bruce is one of the few great singer songwriters of all time. I still listen to those solo Columbia demos. Emotionally raw with all heart.
