Michael Bublé sings in soulless, emotionless way…. okay, if one includes “smugness” as an emotion, I suppose, this isn’t strictly true.

After having listened to this CD for close to a week, I’d have to say that Michael Bublé still sounds like an amateur Rat-Pack wannabe, who has learned how to sing a bunch of songs closely associated with Sinatra and his circle and one or two others (like the incredibly camp “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” from Queen). However, his interpretation lack depth, experience and sincerity. He is, essentially, “going through the motions” on each track. His rapport with the audience is very artificial, too. If he wasn’t actually serious about this stuff, one would assume the whole thing was some sort of camp “send up”.

When I hear Michael Bublé all I can think of is: why would anyone bother with this faux, milksop Rat-Packer when there are so many great recordings by Sinatra, Martin, Bennett and Davis Jr readily available today?

I kind of feel that Michael Bublé is to the music of this decade what Rick Astley was to the music of the 1980s.

I just listened to the Madison Square Garden concert and was impressed but dismayed as well. Impressed by the great sound quality and by his tight band and the great arrangements as well as the song selection. Dismayed by the way he sings, or more accurately the way he enunciates the lyrics. He’s got that God’s gift of a voice that is SO nice but for some reason he sounds like he has a sore on his tongue or something during this concert. Was he trying to be hip or to create some kind of new vocal hook? Was he trying to sound like a rat-packer in New York? Was he using auto tune? Was he drunk? I don’t know but for some reason he pronounces many of his words in a really weird way and it’s unpleasant and distracting. When you’ve got a voice and band as great as he does you should just let them speak (or sing) for themselves. Listen closely, you’ll see what I mean. He didn’t sound like this on previous albums and whatever he changed for the MSG show, he needs to unchange it or I will cease being a fan.

I guess the title should have tipped me off but really – the audience starts clapping in the middle of a song! Go back to the studio Michael.

What there was of it was good. But why not put the whole concert on? I did like the presentation of Michael singing without the mic at the end of the show, the several times I’ve seen him in concert that is the most amazing part to me.
