There are a few good songs on this album, but if you compare it to some of their later albums, it just doesn’t measure up. This album is regarded by most Queen fans as their best, but I highly disagree.

Procession – 7/10 not much for instrumental openers

Father To Son – 7/10 a weak track

White Queen – 10/10 one of the few shining stars on this cd

Some Day One Day – 5/10 just plain boring

The Loser In The End – 7/10 ok song but not great

Ogre Battle – 9/10

The Fairy Feller’s Master-Stroke – 7/10

Nevermore – 9/10 would give it a 10 if the song was a bit longer. great song though

The March Of The Black Queen – 10/10 best reason to buy Queen II

Funny How Love Is – 4/10 crap, crap, crap

Seven Seas Of Rhye – 10/10

overall rating – 85/110. if you want great Queen music, check out these albums:

Innuendo

Even being a huge fan of Queen’s distinctive contributions to rock music, I cannot quite get my head around this album. Its “A Night At The Opera” without the wit, the knowing self-deprecating wink of the heavily-shadowed eyelash from Mr. Mercury. Its just over-calculated, over-produced, over-kill. Brian May had some killer stoner-rock riffs on this album, and it does indeed have some of Queen’s heaviest music. But the vast majority of the lyrics sound like the band spent too much time listening to “Battle of Evermore”, particularly the segment of the album written by Mercury – it approaches unbearable at times during “The March of the Black Queen”, the thousand-fold layered vox on this pierce your eardrum like a rusty icepick. That having been said, to be fair, the album I feel is best judged in the context of the times and of the band’s career. And while the production is definitely ahead of its time, and the lightness of songs like “The Fairy-Feller’s Master-Stroke” hint strongly at their breakthrough third album, I really think Mercury’s songwriting here is a work in progress. The remaster features three bonus tracks, including the tuneless-but-enjoyable blues romp “See What a Fool I’ve Been” and remixes of “Ogre Battle” and “Seven Seas Of Rhye.”

I first bought this LP in 1974 when I was 11 years old
after the first time someone played it for me, so for me this is the best that Queen gets. There are other
great projects from this band (and not so great!) but I always tend to really dig the “first impression” LP the best. The songs are great and the playing is as tight as this era gets.

My only problem here is:
My CD (that I bought from an AMAZON used shop) was not the described CD. The seller sent me a “remastered” pressing from 1994 (PARLOPHONE 0777 7 89275 2 5) and not the latest version. MY LP SOUNDS PUNCHIER, BRIGHTER and just plain 100 times BETTER than this UK pressing!! Did they hit the TRANSFER [BAD] BUTTON? The artwork looks like the label just took a picture of the LP cover, cut the boys’ pic out, made it a brown tint, and pasted it to a black background! It is really dull and plain gross.
The original inside gatefold photo has been “photoshopped” to death so it looks like a real bad grainey JPG. JUNK ARTWORK. Nothing like the LP release. Are all QUEEN II cds like this?
If so, stick to your LP! I want to give this music 5 stars but I must take 2 away because of the label’s fauxpas greed. The remaining stars are for the band and their music! HAIL FM!!!!!

This was (obviously) Queen’s second album. Queen was sort of a glam/progressive/arty group at this point. They had not quite developed their “signature sound” by this point, but they were on their way. There aren’t really any “classic” queen songs here, other than their first hit, the great “Seven Seas of Rhye”. The CD adds three bonus tracks, “See What a Fool I’ve Been”, which was the b-side of “Seven Seas of Rhye”, and two useless remixes of songs from the original album.

Queen II was released before they were very popular in the U.S. Again, this is one of those albums that I bought when it first came out. I still like some of the songs today…Especially, Father To Son. The tracks are varied and not overdone like they were on some of their later works. It was when they became commercial that I dumped this album. But, still I ask why did I ever get rid of this on vinyl??? Queen II still sounds pretty good to me today…considering all of the so-called classic rock or soon to be classic rock that is out there.
