So many b-sides are better than some songs that appear on the actual albums.

@gokinsmen Make Believe is amazing and, even tho Raditude sucks, you can still hear that Rivers is still very talented, run over by a truck is a masterpiece.

Matt’s contribution to the band was as a check-and-balance to Rivers’ more sell-out tendencies. No way he would put up with shit like Make Believe and Raditude. Rivers maybe talented, but he himself admits how much he loves being famous and “shocking” people.
Matt, annoying as he can be, is like that cynical nerd who rolls his eyes at everything Top 40. He himself may not be talented, but he doesn’t put up with garbage music.

@jupiterdreamer Well, this was actually recorded for Songs From The Black Hole, but the project was scrapped after the bassist Matt Sharp released Return of the Rentals. This album sounded strikingly similar to SFTBH, so Rivers went on to write and releases Pinkerton.
Some of the SFTBH songs (Tired of Sex, Getchoo, No Other One, and Why Bother?) were released on Pinkerton, but the rest either haven’t been released yet or have seen their release as b-sides, leaked demos and compilation albums.

@strodl A quick listen to Rivers’ original “Tired of Sex” demo or watching Rivers outright teach Matt the bass parts on the Weezer DVD is proof enough that Matt had nothing to do with the songwriting – the “All songs written by Rivers Cuomo” on Pinkerton and the Blue album are actually true.
Again, Matt was a cool guy and fit the band well at the time, but he is NOT the reason why they changed so drastically – it was just a coincidence of timing.

@strodl The Rentals sound like Weezer because Matt spent a lot of time copping Cuomo’s style, so much so that the album Rivers was working on in 1995, Songs from the Black Hole, was scrapped out of fear of people thinking that HE had ripped off the Rentals (the result was Pinkerton).

@runnersdialzero33 Matt Sharp was way more than just the bass player. Listen to the Rentals and you know what I mean.

@Neto808 The bass player was not “important” to their early style. A skilled guy, I enjoy his bass playing and backup voacls, but he didn’t help write any of these songs, he was simply in the right place at the right time.

Yeah, the bass player was very important when Rivers wrote those songs alone in Boston in the Pinkerton era.

I heard a demo for this yonks (about 5-6 years) ago and always preferred it to the final one. Does anyone know where I can hear that?

I think next to Jamie this is by far one of the best =W= songs. This is back in the day with good ol’ Mr. Sharp and not Scott. Weezer’s music went down the hill after Mikey.
