What is the Problem People have with Madonna and Angelina Jolie Adopting children in Africa?

Posted by Top Songs

I live in Africa and know that some children would be better off with celebrities in the USA than over here. Every day in Africa 34 000 children die. That is equivalent to 500 bus loads of children, every day.

Why then do people refer to people like Angelina Jolie and Madonna in such a negative manner? What has happened to applauding a good thing? Please enlighten me because maybe I am just confused.

They are doing a WONDERFUL thing, but they are only doing it because it is “popular” and “trendy” to do so.

We wish they would do it out of the goodness of their hearts, and not becasue it gives them more media attention

There is no problem with it. People just like to whine.
PS: Bruno does it in his next movie.

I don’t mind it; I think it’s a kind thing to do.

My mother says it’s ridiculous because there are kids in America that need families. She doesn’t realize that they’re not starving or anything in the US government’s care.

You are absolutely correct! People are crazy and just criticize on the smallest of things. well nothing is wrong with them, they are great people!! and its an amazing thing to help children in need, people shouldn’t be looking at that in a negative way at all!

I think it’s because often the adoptions aren’t done completely legit, (eg. Madonnas latest adoption – it caused a pretty big stir).

Also that the kids that are being adopted often HAVE a mother and father who still want to raise them, they just have no power over the celebrities.

Most times, the kids are left to nannies and ignored by the celebrity too. Maddonna is known for not giving any time to her children, although they are certainly clothed, fed and entertained by the nannies.

Of course there probably are some good cases where celebrities do adopt, and take good care of them. It’s just that ‘normal’ non-famous familes / people often have more time for the kids.

Madonna & Angelina don’t live in the united states. The only negative thing i know about adoption is that white children never get placed with colored families. why is this?

To the people it bothers, it’s kind of like the whole celebrities and chihuahuas/tiny dogs thing. They buy the dog, take it everywhere, dress it in expensive clothes, make it wear sunglasses, shoes, etc… Adopting children from third-world countries is viewed similarly to small dogs that are purchased (and exploited) as an “accessory” — like a D&B or LV purse… or any other expensive thing that is meant to draw attention and put them in the lime light. People see it as celebs saying, “Look at my new toy!”

Well if you search the net there are alot cases of kids be kidnapped and trafficked from their families to satisfy american adoption needs Lets face it they didnt and wouldnt adopt an older child or disabled or diseased or a bunch of other things. Alot of uneducated parents are being coersed and signing their healthy good looking childeren over thinking its some sort of exchange program thinking they will get them back or talk to them while giving them a better life in america. With the amount of money paid to private attorneys you would be surprised what they will do to find you the perfect babyhttp://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7524514.stm

Regardless of their intentions or their motivating factors, they are taking children out of an orphanage with little or no health care or education and giving them a life of wealth and opportunity. I think they are probably either jealous of the lifestyle that they will never have or they have nothing else going on in their own lives. I think it is wonderful that they are offering hope and privilege to children that may have no other chance in life.

Madonna BOUGHT David and Mercy, pure and simple.

Last time I checked, human trafficking was illegal. Remember the slave trade, anyone? Madonna has had so much negative press lately that she thought buying another kid to add to the brood she already has would cast her in a more favorable light.

David’s father is still alive. David was NOT in an orphanage. He was not being abused. If Madonna truly cared about what was best for David, she could have donated the money she paid for him to his village. Then his BIOLOGICAL father could have raised him with proper food and water and he could’ve gone to school with his relatives and friends, rather than be uprooted from the only life he’s ever known (not to mention his culture, heritage, and native language) to live with a rich white woman.

I hope that they are doing it for good reasons, and not the reasons that some of the people that answered this question believes. I truly believe that Madonna is sincere. I am not saying that agree with everything that Madonna does, or every song that she has sung, because I don’t. But I can tell you this- that woman truly loves children. About Angelina- not sure of her motives, but for heavens sake those children that wind up never adopted by anyone, it sure is better than NEVER being adopted. Over the past few years, adoption has gotten a bad rap, and that is sad, I don’t understand why either, my friend. If both of those celebs had gotten pregnant and publicized getting an abortion, I don’t think they would have been getting such negative responses. VERY SAD! They want to give a better life to a child, that may even die, if no one adopts them- How can this be? I really don’t know, but it saddens my heart.

In principle I have nothing against them adopting as they are giving the children they adopt a far better lifestyle. What I object to is the way they go about it. If the average person (or couple) off the street adopts then they have to abide by the laws of the country they are adopting from which includes living in the country for x amount of time. Madonna comes along and chucks money at the government then if she doesn’t get what she wants straight away she chucks a tantrum offers more money then gets what she wants. This portrays the image that a child is just another assessory for her and takes away from the real issue. Another thing that bugs me about Madonna is she lied to David’s father and that is so very wrong. He didn’t understand fully what would happen when David was adopted and she broke her promise about contact.

Well here in England, Angelina gets praised and Madonna gets condemned. I think because her children still have birth relatives who want them. And they think Madonna is just jumping on the bandwagon doing it because its trendy – because Madonna always jumps on bandwagons to do whats trendy. She’s always done that. People think this is another trend.

The children Madonna purchased have parents who are fit to raise their own children. This makes both of her adoptions unethical. She has not kept her promises to David’s father, and she physically abuses her children. I have a problem with ANYONE who physically abuses their children, but to take a child from perfectly good (albeit poor) parents just to abuse them, that sickens me.

Angelina adopted via a corrupt system (adoptions from Cambodia have been shut down due to unethical and illegal practices by the people who procured Angie’s son for her).

All of the children that Brangelina and Madonna have adopted would have been just fine with some assistance in their own home countries. Instead, they have been ripped from everything they know, plunked down into a house where no one looks like them (ONE, and ONLY one good thing about Madonna’s adoption of Mercy is that at least she and David won’t be alone as outcasts in their family – at least they will have each other), in a country full of racist, entitled strangers. I don’t see how that’s a “better life”.

With all the money that Brangelina and Madonna have, if they had cared at ALL about these children, they could have simply helped them – and MANY others – to live safe, healthy lives in their OWN countries. Instead, the money they paid for these children went (mostly) into the pockets of baby brokers and politicians, and the needy children (and adults) in their home countries won’t see a dime of that.

How exactly is that a GOOD thing?

ETA: RPMR, if you had read my entire answer, you would have seen the answer to your question. But I’ll dumb it down for you, mkay? That 19 million dollars that Madonna paid for Mercy would have worked very nicely to help her, and plenty of others, stay right where they are, with plenty of food, clothing, shelter, clean water, etc. to last a lifetime. Get it?

I don’t have a problem with people who adopt a child through following the rules of adoption from that country. Madonna wanted a heap of exemptions because she donated money. That sets a precedence in inter-country adoptions that’s most adoptive parents even find unacceptable. Gosh even my own husband who doesn’t give a rip about celebrities even had a few words to say about Madonna on this one, and they weren’t good.

Angelina did live in Africa for a at least 2yrs. She followed the protocol at least. She worked in orphanges so I can see how she became an adoptive parent that way.

We all want these kids to have a chance at life, but at what cost to them? If they can stay in Africa and be sponsored than I’m all for that. If they can’t then lets make sure the right thing is done by the child and its truly in their best interests NO Exceptions no matter how much money a person has in the bank. Inter-country adoption needs to be treated with more respect than she has done.

These women spend months away from home at a time. That means they are either leaving their children or moving their children constantly. Kids need structure. They need to be in their home, not moving around from hotel to hotel or even from house to house. They need to be looked after by their parents, not a nanny. I have just as much problem with other celebrities having their own children though. Yes I am the type of person who thinks once someone has children at least one of the parents should give up work and stay home with them if they can afford it. Why should it be any different for celebrities, especially considering they have so much money?

Werner.—-Your figures–

one day—– 34,000—children die.

one week 238,000–children die.

one mouth 952,000—children die.

12 mouths 11,424,000–children die

Then if your figure’s are right then l would say Africa needs evey child its got to self survive.

THAT is one problem with Madonna and Co playing around in Africa with children lives. The second is, its the only whey they can make news head lines these days.

Third is, .money talks.—THE fourth is they are now a bunch of has beens and thats where they should stay–yours–

i think it’s a good thing when done well and for the right reasons.

the difference between angelina and madonna are vast – angelina has done lots of humantiarian work – particularly in cambodia from where she adopted her first child, she is rarely seen in public without her children and she has done alot to promote adoption as a good thing.

madonna on the other hand raised alot of controversy when she ’stole’ a child from it’s father in a country that doesn’t allow international adoption. this is the sort of thing that gives international adoption a bad name.

when exceptions were made for madonna, who is never seen with her kids by the way, it angered alot of people who have been denied or turned away because of the same legal issues that she has skirted around because of her ‘celebrity’

truth be told madonna sickened me off international adoption to a point.

i do applaud it when it’s a good thing, when a child is going to a loving home and it will be cared for and loved.

on the other hand i am disgusted when a child is used as a publicity tool – like madonna.

I agree with you…its a wonderful thing. I adopted twins from China and I love them as Im sure they love there beautiful babies from Africa. But many people don’t like International adoption. I have been criticized because I supposedly stole my children from China which i think is a bunch of bs. Its a wonderful thing and hopefully the world will see that soon.

People here are so naive. Oh my God! “They would have been just fine in their country with assistance.” Assistance from who? The government? Who does nothing? If their parents were fit to raise them, they would not be in an orphanage. That is where they were you know… I know a lot of people who speak against international adoption has never been to a third world country. So sad…. I don’t think just Angelina and Madonna should reach out to fellow human beings (not children in foreign countries) for adoption.

1. Both Madonna and Angelina Jolie (but especially the former) are using international adoption as a means to get the spotlight. I don’t think it’s right for adults to use children as a forum for grandstanding and career boosting.

2. Madonna adopted from a country that requires a lengthy in-country waiting period as part of their established international adoption laws. Sure, it’s inconvenient. Most foreign couples looking to adopt probably can’t afford to just take six months off work and live in Africa. But that was the *law*. Madonna successfully circumvented that law, which shows to me, a general disrespect for the laws and culture of the children she adopted.

3. Madonna’s second child, Mercy, had family in-country that were willing and able to care for her. International adoption should be the last resort, when there is no family willing or able to raise the child.

4. As an international adoptive parent, I cringe at how the media portrays celebrity adoptions. The description of the process is not realistic. You don’t just fly to Ethiopia and pick out a pretty baby girl. There is a lengthy process involved with being approved to adopt, then being matched with a child. The problem is, Americans as a culture tend to want what they want, and want it now. When the adoption process takes longer than expected (because according to Oprah, you just go pick one out!) the prospective adoptive couples start getting demanding with the agency, even going so far as to travel to the country and *demand* that the government drop whatever they are doing and take care of *their* adoption. Right now.

Like I said, I am an international adoptive parent. My children are from Africa, in fact. It’s a matter of how it was done and how it was portrayed that concerns me.

People are judgemental. They are jealous, perhaps, too. Adopting a child that needs a family is a wonderful thing. There are way too many abandoned and orphaned children in the world. Yes, there is corruption, too… but not in all cases like some would like the general population to believe.

Adopting one or two children does nothing to address the real problems going on in impoverished countries. It is just the celebrities collecting children and feeling like saviors when they are often sidestepping the laws to acquire these children.
Personally, I would rather stay in my own country and culture and language than live my life as someone’s pet.

And wasn’t Madonna funding the orphanage that Mercy was living in? If it was such an awful place and she was funding it, what does that say about Madonna?

They are high profile people so undue attention is paid to their actions. Some people may feel that they should be adopting underprivileged children in their own countries first.

because superstars just want those kids as accesories. Like handbags. also if the courts didn’t let them have the kiddies there must have been a valid reason.

Dear Werner,

Wouldn’t it be even better if we could INSTEAD, actually improve the conditions for all people who live in less than ideal situations while allowing them the opportunity to remain within their original families, communities and cultures?
