When i found out that Foo Fighters were releasing a best of. i immediately feared that we were seeing the end of foo fighters for awhile. Then when i found out about Grohl’s side project (Them Crooked Vultures)I was sure that it was going to be some time before i heard a new foo fighters song. Dave did not let me down though. this song Wheels is excellent. Just what i needed to get by until a new foo fighters album.

This song would fit brilliantly on There Is Nothing Left To Lose or Echoes Silence Patience and Grace. Melodic rock that will no doubt keep the fan base occupied during the band’s hiatus. As a fan of the Foo’s since 1995 this song does not disappoint. Some fans will wish for a harder rock song I’m sure, but since this from their Greatest Hits CD they wisely do not veer off into uncharted territory.

A must-have for fans of the Foos.

My guess is that it’s finally time to really give the Foos their due as one of the Great American Rock Bands, on a rough plateau with Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, John Mellencamp, Cheap Trick, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Classic bands all, and they are where the Foo Fighters have always drawn inspiration, classic hook-filled stadium-sized arena rock firmly fueled by three-chord, blues-based bar stomp. Alternative shmalternative….the Foos have been treading classic mainstream rock better than just about any band for longer than I can remember, and this song is further proof of their genius.

Thus it’s no accident that ‘Wheels’ sounds vaguely Tom Petty-ish, it’s chorus and backbeat sounding fresh and energetic. Dave Grohl tones his vox down a bit and sings rather than screams, and the lyrics mirror a band hitting middle-age with grace and newfound energy.

I know it’s an add-on to a greatest hits package, and the Foos have once again gone on hiatus while Dave gets his Zeppelin Jones on, but this is a way cool song that cements the Foo Fighters as one of the great killer-singles bands of all time.

I turn my radio up every time this song comes on.

Good job, boys.
