Why was it ok for Sascha Baron Cohen to mock Judaism and cultures everywhere, but Madonna he gets flamed for?

Posted by Top Songs

BTW, Im a fan of the guy.

I like how he retired his character Borat. Interesting, brilliant, but getting stale.

In case anyone missed it, the guy was at the Golden Globes, and before presenting an award, made a joke about Madonna, how her husband Guy Ritchie (now ex) was one of her servants or something.

The Hollywood crowd gasped and moaned like someone got shot.

I have nothing against Madonna, but for crying out loud, why are people so hypocritical?

Hiya,

Sacha Baron Cohen SAID he was retiring Borat (and Ali G) for good about a year ago… but did he really? One quick search may reveal a news video ‘rough draft’ (at least at the time of this writing) on Youtube that indicates Borat has returned, or at least made a very recent appearance. A more detailed final version of that news video will likely give some information about that Borat sighting…
See sources below for link.

As far as Cohen’s Madonna joke at this year’s Golden Globe awards… ‘Borat’ could get away with being a misogynist racist because that’s who the character is. Whereas Cohen wasn’t “hiding” behind that persona at the Golden Globes…

So as Borat he can whatever he wants, but is held more accountable (apparently) when he’s being himself.

BTW, I think he said something about the recession being so bad that Madonna had to fire one of her personal assistants, and said his thoughts go out to Guy Ritchie. :-)

…actually, I’ll add a link below to a video of Cohen’s appearance at the Golden Globes, so you and readers here can see it for themselves.

Personally I’m not sure why that joke was received worse than the others he told – I think the jokes about Victoria Beckham and Charlie Sheen were worse. Maybe they thought it was more ‘tasteless’? Dunno for sure, but good question.

Hope my answer helps! :-)
